In this tutorial, we'll walk through how to use ChatGPT to create detailed, data-driven customer personas that will help inform your product development and go-to-market strategies. By better understanding your target audience, you can build products that solve real customer problems and craft marketing messages that resonate.

Collect your customer data

Start by aggregating all available data on your existing customers and target audience. This could include demographics, behaviors, transaction history, support interactions, website analytics, social media activity and more.

To identify all potential data sources, prompt ChatGPT:

We are developing a customer persona template for my company. I want to start by analyzing my existing customers and wider audience. What are all the data sources I should consider?

You’ll want to collect as much data as possible that represents your target customer.

Survey questions

To augment your data with qualitative insights, use ChatGPT to create a survey you can send out to all of your existing customers.

Generate a revealing 5-question open text survey I can send out to my customers to better understand what they love about our business and what we can do better.

Interview questions

And to go even deeper, identify 5 customers you can interview to understand better.

Generate a list of questions and topics I can explore with my existing customers. It will help me lead a conversation with my current customers who I want to better understand.

Now that you’ve collected customer data, survey answers, and interview insights, it’s time to analyze and build your customer personas.

Analyze your customers

Inputting customer data

Feed the aggregated data, survey responses and interview notes into ChatGPT and instruct it to generate customer persona profiles:

I have attached information about my customers including [data sources]. Analyze the information in the context of a [your business category]. Highlight attributes of the customers, what they value, and what their biggest challenges are.

Create your customer persona templates

With your data and analysis completed, you can now generate customer personas. It’s best not to identify a specific number of personas to create. ChatGPT will analyze the information and data you’ve shared and usually generate 2-6 personas - an example of which you can see below.

Based on the analysis you've conducted, create customer personas that can be distributed across the company.

Review the personas

Prior to sharing your customer personas across your company, manually review and edit. Even AI doesn’t have as good an understanding as you do about your business and the customers you talk to. You may even remove a customer persona your company is intentionally moving away from based on a recent strategy change.

Share your customer personas across the company

Customer personas are only valuable when they’re widely distributed across the company. Get ChatGPT to help you write an email selling the personas internally.

Write an email out to your company communicating the personas. Share the value of customer personas and how they can help people do their jobs. Assume the actual personas are included as a link in the email.

Share the polished personas and memo with your team. Encourage everyone to apply the persona insights to their work.
