Regardless of your industry, you need a website. To help you get discovered, inform your audience, and build legitimacy. This tutorial shows you how to use generative AI to build a website that sells a product or service. Whether you’re running a local lawn care company or a leading AI SaaS tool, the components of a successful website are surprisingly similar.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to:

  • Develop compelling website copy that engages visitors
  • Highlight key aspects of your business effectively
  • Use ChatGPT to streamline the writing process

Step 1: Understand your audience

Tell ChatGPT about your business

You’ll want to start by familiarizing ChatGPT with your business. Use this prompt:

You’re going to help me write a website for my business. I’ll start by giving you a summary of the business and the audience. Before writing the whole website, provide a brief demographic and psychographic analysis of the audience.

Business summary: [your business]

Target audience: [your audience]

Identifying your audience’s needs and preferences

Once ChatGPT expands on your audience’s profile, start exploring the needs and preferences of the audience. Eventually, we’ll find a key business message that aligns with their desires.

When it comes to software and hardware tools, what does this audience desire? Draw insights from other successful products and services for this audience.

Step 2: Develop a unique value proposition

Your next step is to start building your company’s value proposition. Usually there’s anywhere from 1-3 value propositions for a business. These won’t necessarily appear word-for-word on your website but will act as a foundation for the copy that ends up being written across the site.

Prompt:

Develop 10 unique value propositions for me to choose from for [business name]. These value propositions should explore different angles of the business and how they provide value to the target audience.

Once you’ve reviewed the options, select the value props that stand out to you. This is to give ChatGPT a better understanding of your business’s position in the minds of your target audience.

Prompt:

Moving forward, let's consider 1, 3, and 5 as key value propositions.

Step 3: Optimize for SEO

When someone Googles your business or your product or service, you want your website to appear in the search results. Website discoverability is a critical element of your website. Planning search engine optimization early on can help you write a website that Google can easily find and present to searchers.

Incorporating keywords naturally

Considering the audience and business, what are some search queries that should be integrated into the website?

These look good. Let’s have ChatGPT bear them in mind as we move forward:

Remember these queries moving forward. Where possible, integrate them into future drafts.

Step 4: Use ChatGPT to generate copy

Components of a website

Next, you’ll develop a draft of your website. Now that ChatGPT is familiar with your business, audience, and value proposition, it’s prepared to offer a strong first draft.

Write an outline of a website for the business. Consider the audience and key value propositions we are presenting to the audience.

Improve key sections

Now let’s work on specific sections of the site that ChatGPT mentioned above. Below, we’ll work on the landing page of our site, but you can use the same steps to improve any of the sections of your website that ChatGPT suggested.

In ChatGPT’s last response, highlight the text of the section you want to improve. Click the “ icon that appears to quote that text in your next prompt:

For the Hero section, offer 5 alternative header and subheader copy combinations.
For the Key Features section, expand on each value proposition with 3-5 sentence paragraphs.
For the Features Page section, expand on each section with 3 benefits and 1 use-case for each.

Step 5: Refine the copy

Making adjustments for voice and tone

Aside from asking ChatGPT to expand or edit its first draft, you can also ask ChatGPT to adjust its voice and tone.

It’s also valuable to tell ChatGPT what it should avoid. For example, when asking for more relaxed, casual marketing copy, ChatGPT has a tendency to exaggerate and sound cheesy.

Adjust the tone of this copy to be more [desired tone], without being [tone to avoid]. Avoid using [specific language or phrases].

You can also ask ChatGPT to remember your direction for future copy as well.

This is the right tone. Remember this for future requests related to website copy.

ChatGPT is a powerful creative partner and editor. As you sharpen the language for your website, present it to real customers and prospects to understand if it resonates. Get feedback and integrate that into your directions with ChatGPT.

Congratulations! You’re bringing your business to life and providing it with a unique message that will resonate with your audience.
